“This simple idea (the reminding that there’s someone who will say these lines) makes the character human, and the scene and the short film start to write a little bit themselves, by asking the right questions. My lecture will be about understanding the basic concepts of directing actors that can bring order and emotion to a script, concepts like objective, verbs and subtext. The final goal is to fight one of the worst enemies of writing, or directing actors, or doing cinema itself: indecision.”

More about the lecture:
Susan will focus on defining and exploring the role of theme in storytelling. We will differentiate between the subject matter of a story, which will materialize as it’s plot; and a story’s theme, which is an active exploration of an idea, a search for some truth about life. Much like writing an essay (which is to test the quality of something, or ascertain its worth), fully realized, three dimensional stories put forward an idea, explore it through the conflicting actions and words of their characters, and then reach a conclusion in what we hope is an emotionally evocative statement about life. We will explore how theme is embedded in the structure of storytelling and how, when done well, reveals the writer’s attitudes and perspectives about life.
